Vic: Arnotts' Victorian factory closes

Long-time Arnott's workers bid the Victorian factory a sad farewell today as the biscuitinstitution closed its doors in Melbourne for good.

The Liquor, Hospitality and Miscellaneous Workers Union says 600 staff have lost theirjobs after the company's parent, the US-based Campbell's soup, decided to close the Victorianoperations.

With today's closure, 131 workers have lost their jobs and the rest will go when thewarehouse closes within the next eight weeks.

The union's assistant state secretary TERRY BREHENY says while staff are satisfiedwith their redundancies, they're bewildered by the closure of the eastern suburbs factorywhich has been producing $100 million worth of product a year.

An Arnott's spokesman was not available for comment.

Last year the food company announced the closure as part of a $100 million upgradewhich will see 160 new jobs created in Sydney and Brisbane.
