MONTPELIER, Vt. A moderate earthquake in southern Quebec was felt throughout northern New England and northeastern New York late Wednesday.
The U.S. Geological Survey's National Earthquake Information Center in Golden, Colo., recorded a quake near Quebec City at 9:34 p.m., said geophysicist Glenn Reagor.
The earthquake registered a preliminary magnitude of 5.0 on the Richter scale, which Reagor characterized as a moderate earthquake capable of ``producing some damage if it was located close to a city or a populated area.''
